What Malay phrases do I need to know in Malaysia?

I’m going over to peninsula Malaysia and Sabah soon and want to know some essential phrases and colloquial. I speak a fair bit of Indonesian, but the topics I study tend to be very specific and don’t seem to relevant to just travelling/socialising. I’m aware its a different language, but yeah maybe if anyone knows some useful colloquial and things that I will often need to say and hear. Terima Kasih!

"Lah" is a surfix in almost any sentence.

"Apa Khabar ?" – How are you ?

"Makan" – Eat

"Saya lapar" – I ma hungry

"Saya panas" – I am hot

"Saya gatal" – Im itchy

What words do you think are worthy of having dictionaries banned from schools?

This school banned dictionaries because a parent complained that there was a definition for oral sex. No, I’m not joking. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1246266/Dictionary-banned-classrooms-defining-explicit-sex-terms.html

I wanna know why that parent was looking up oral sex in a children’s classroom in the first place.

No words.
Acting responsibly does not come from being uneducated. If parents think words in the dictionary are a bad influence then they should teach their children to make better decisions, not try to hide them from the world.

The kid probably saw the word during class, was talking about it later and the parents overheard. That’s my guess.

What is the difference between "ser" in preterite and imperfect?

I need help with my Spanish homework! I have to write 8 sentences with "ser", 4 of them in the imperfect and 4 in the preterite tense.
My teacher was trying to explain the difference, but she only preceded to confuse me more… what is the difference in use and context? Are there specific times when one is used over the other?

Thanks!

Ser in preterite is fui, fuiste, fue, fueron, fuimos.
Ser in imperfect is era, eras, era, eran, eramos.

Preterite refers to a specific moment in time. For example, i went to mexico last summer: Fui a méxico el verano pasado.

The imperfect tense is used to refer to an unspecified amount of time, or to describe an action that hasn’t yet ended. The one i remember easiest was, when i was a little boy… i ate a lot, i played soccer, etc etc: Cuando era niño, comaba mucho y jugaba… don’t quote me on the comaba because i don’t think that’s right. But I think that pretty much sums it up. Good luck!

Difference between binary fission and conjugation. Binary fission is the means by which a bacterial cell duplicates its components and divides into two cells. Conjugation is the transfer of genetic information from one bacterial cell to another by means of a conjugation pili. With binary fission you initially start out with one cell and end up with two. With conjugation no new cells are created, you start and end with two cells. Also, in binarny fission all genetic material is replicated (chromosome, plasmids, etc). In conjugation, not all genetic material is replicated and passed.

Similarities – both systems replicate at least a portion of DNA.
