I need help with my Spanish homework! I have to write 8 sentences with "ser", 4 of them in the imperfect and 4 in the preterite tense.
My teacher was trying to explain the difference, but she only preceded to confuse me more… what is the difference in use and context? Are there specific times when one is used over the other?
Thanks!
Ser in preterite is fui, fuiste, fue, fueron, fuimos.
Ser in imperfect is era, eras, era, eran, eramos.
Preterite refers to a specific moment in time. For example, i went to mexico last summer: Fui a méxico el verano pasado.
The imperfect tense is used to refer to an unspecified amount of time, or to describe an action that hasn’t yet ended. The one i remember easiest was, when i was a little boy… i ate a lot, i played soccer, etc etc: Cuando era niño, comaba mucho y jugaba… don’t quote me on the comaba because i don’t think that’s right. But I think that pretty much sums it up. Good luck!

“Funeral” is a new TV commerical launched by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) which looks at relationships in a different light, through a woman at her husband’s funeral. Ultimately, the TVC celebrates the beautiful imperfections that make a relationship perfect. This is fresh off MCYS latest Viewers’ Choice 2008 win for last year’s Family TVC which promotes the importance and value of family bonding.

If given a verb, what are some good ways to tell if it should be preterite versus imperfect?
Preterite is used:
1. For actions that can be viewed as single events
Anoche, ella me besó. Last night, she kissed me. (It happened ONE time)
2. For actions that were repeated a specific number of times
Anoche ella me besó siete veces. Last night, she kissed me seven times. (The exact number of times is known)
For actions that occurred during a specific period of time
Pasé el año pasado en Puerto Rico. (I spent the past year in Puerto Rico)
The entire year is considered a specific period of time in which you completed the action from start to finish.
4. For actions that were part of a chain of events
Ayer fui a la tienda, compre una camisa, fui al banco, y regresé a la casa.
Yesterday I went to the store, I bought a shirt, I went to the bank, and returned home. You started and completed all of these actions.
5. To state the beginning or the end of an action
Abri la puerta y entré la casa. I opened the door and entered the house. It shows a completed action (entering the house) from start to finish.
Imperfect:
For actions that were repeated habitually
1. Siempre limpiaba mi cuarto antes de salir. "I always cleaned my room before going out."
This means that you repeated the same action multiple times during a time period that is NOT specified explicitly.
2. For actions that "set the stage" for another past action
Estaba hablando por telefono cuando alguien tocó la puerta. (I was talking on the phone when somebody knocked on the door)
The action of talking on the phone "sets the stage" for when somebody interrupted you by knocking on the door.
*Hint: Draw a line for the action and then show when that line is interrupted by another action. The action before the interruption is the imperfect tense and the interruption is in the preterite tense.
_____________________________________
Estaba hablando por telefono cuando alguien TOCÓ LA PUERTA.
3. For telling time
Eran las dos de la tarde. It was 2pm.
4. For stating one’s age.
Cuando tenía diez años fui a Disney World. "When I was ten I went to Disney World".
5. For mental states (usually)
Estaba muy triste ayer. "I was very sad yesterday". (Notice it’s a specific period of time which usually calls for the preterite– but because it’s an emotional state you use the imperfect)
6. For physical sensations (usually)
Tenía hambre todo el día. "I was hungry all day." (Again, notice it’s a specific period of time which usually calls for the preterite– but because it’s a physical sensation you use the imperfect)
7. To describe the characteristics of people, things or conditions.
People: Ella era linda. She was pretty.
Things: La casa estaba sucia. The house was dirty.
Conditions: Hacía frio ayer. Yesterday it was cold. (Again, notice it’s a specific period of time which usually calls for the preterite– but because it’s a description of a condition (the weather) you use the imperfect)

Just revising so much my head’s sort of confused xD I have an exam tomorrow.
Both seem to be to do with things that may happen, e.g. "If I were a cow" (si fuera una vaca – Imperfect subjunctive) or compraría "I would buy". But both seem so similar with the "were"s and "would"s that I am getting confused.
Please help Spanish speakers!
The conditional usually refers to an action that is conditional.
I would go to the store if I had a car.
Iría a la tienda si tuviera coche.
While the imperfecto de subjuntivo usually refers to actions, thoughts etc. that may happen, usually in the future.
You told me that I might come at three.
Me dijiste que viniera a las tres.

I need to replace the carpet and countertops in my rent house. Does anyone know where I can purchase discontinued or slightly imperfect carpets and countertops?
Every year interior designers get a list of discontinued carpet by the manufactuers. Sometimes there are rolls, sometimes remnants. You can look at outlets in your area because they buy up the lots of what is left. Also, if you have a re-use it center in your area, often you can find carpet in perfectly good conditon that was replaced by another flooring option. You might try freecycle or craigslist as well. Often installers that took out carpet or countertops in good condition unload their "finds" there rather than paying the dump fees.

The second law basically teaches 100% efficiency is impossible–therefore perfection is impossible–therefore any deity existing can not by definition be perfect. Therefore the abrahamic deity is imperfect.
There’s no such thing as perfection. The universe is what it is.

I know that in new-age gnosticism the gnostics view God as all other religions do. Though, there are different branches…
Can someone tell me which belief system regards the god of the world as imperfect?
Those gnostics that believe this are probably in the majority. The Essenes, Mandeans, Sethians and to an extent the New Cathar church, among others. Which is not that new and go by the Good Christians believe this. As an ancient Christian, we agree. The Christ Spirit revealed that his father was not our Father and we knew not his Father nor his God. He stated that we do the will of our Father the Devil. This should speak for itself.

How does value of information, opportunity costs, marginal analysis and diminishing utility play a role in imperfect knowledge of demand?
Imperfect knowledge’s affect on demand is actually pretty simple: it changes demand from where it really should be. Sometimes lack of information can over-hype demand, causing demand to be much higher than it should be for consumers, and sometimes it can understate demand. Both hurt society, as utility cannot be overstated or understated, so an incorrect demand curve will result in too much or too little of a product.
Value of information can play a role in imperfect knowledge, and a great example of this is what’s called rational voter ignorance. Suppose there is going to be a tax that taxes every citizen in a town with a population of 1000 $1 and gives $1000 to a company in that town. The company getting $1000 will naturally lobby and spend money (not more than $1000 of course) to pass this law. Will anyone lobby against it? Probably not. Who would rationally spend more than $1 trying to research this bill? Economically speaking, no one would, and even though each person loses money, the opportunity cost of trying to change the outcome of the vote would end up costing them more money than the $1 they lose if they do nothing. The value of information is too low in this case ($1) for consumers to try to get perfect information.
That should get you started.

Can anyone describe the 3 problems that make the consumer price index an imperfect measure of the cost of living?
1. Does not capture how people change their consumption habits when the relative prices of goods change
2. Does not account for the introduction of new goods
3. Does not measure quality change
