How do publishers of dictionaries and atlases know if a pirate has copyrighted their work?

My sister got this problem in her school for a optional question and who ever has solved it gets a treat. But yeah, my sister said that it’s something in between the book that they put in purposely so they know its their copy. Thank you to whoever can solve this as my sister really wants to know!

Hi Republic

Copyright is a form of intellectual property which gives the creator of an original work exclusive rights for a certain time period in relation to that work, including its publication, distribution and adaptation.

For a publishers of dictionaries, if any one has copy more then 70% same with the original work without permission or without puting refrences is consider as copyrighted.

Copyright is something that is implied when something is written. It’s automatic. However many want to have more protection than that. Some copyright a book by sending it to themselves in a sealed envelope. When it comes back to them, the postal mark on the package has a date. As long as the package is not opened, some accept this as a way to copyright a book, but it might not stand up in court if there is a problem.

How Can The Chinese Have Dictionaries With Their Non-Alphabetical Writing?

The charachter writing of the Chinese has no A to Z, hence no begining or end. So how does one organize the words so they can be looked-up?

Or do they not have dictionaries and encyclopedias at all? If so How is it done.
I have been told that the characters are organized by complexity. But now they do have a Roman alphabet spelling. My question is how did they do this before the adaptation of our Roman alphabet?

It’s based on breaking down characters into sub-units and strokes. Many characters are made up of combinations of other simpler characters, and one of those is traditionally identified as the "radical". It’s usually the one on the left or top of the character. The radical is used like the first letter in a Western dictionary – it takes you to the right general area. From that point, they’re organized by the number of strokes in the character. Some characters don’t have easily identifiable radicals though, and the system for indexing those can be pretty arbitrary – different dictionaries often use different systems. As you might guess, it takes a while to learn how to use one, and it’s often a rather slow process until you learn that particular dictionary’s system.

“Dictionaries are important reference tools for writers to use”. Give your views regarding above statement.

Dictionaries are for people who can’t figure out what a word means by looking at the context in which it is used as well as looking at the meanings of portions of the word in question.

Those who read a lot and also write, usually know more words, not because they spend their days reading through a dictionary. They spend their days reading books in which some words may be unfamiliar, but easy enough to figure out.

The true Writer’s tool is a Thesaurus; Because sometimes we don’t want to use the same blasted word over and over.

Where can I download Microsoft Office Word dictionaries/thesaurus?

I have Word 2007, but the dictionaries and thesaures are only in English. I write letters in Italian too, so I would need to have dictionaries that can detect my mistakes when I type. How can I download dictionaries for Word in other languages? Is there a way I can have packages with languages as plugin to Office Word 2007?
I have Vista, so I think the procedure might differ!

This procedure applies only if you are running a language version of Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition that doesn’t match the language you want to type. Use this procedure when you want to be able to enter characters for Baltic, Central European, Cyrillic, Greek, and Turkish languages in Microsoft Office programs.

On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Click the Windows Setup tab.
In the Components list, click MultiLanguage Support, and then click Details.
Select the check boxes next to the languages you want to use.

Otherwise if you go to the microsoft site, they may have what you need.

is there a specific name for the artwork included in dictionaries?

I’m trying to find out more about who drew the line drawings of older dictionaries – in particular my 75 year old Funk and Wagnall.

Look at the front of the dictionary by the publisher’s name and it should also list the name of the illustrator. The pictures are simply called illustrations as far as I know.
